Restored fireplace alcove with a stove and decorated mantel

Opening one back up

  1. 1Find out what is behind it

A CCTV look up the flue and a proper inspection of the opening, before anything is committed to.

  2. 2Open up and make safe

Board and infill removed, the lintel checked or replaced, and the opening brought back to a usable size.

  3. 3Hearth and surround

A new hearth laid to the right size and thickness, and the surround fitted or the original restored.

  4. 4Finish and clear

Made good, vacuumed through, and the waste leaves with him rather than sitting in your garden.

What is usually behind the board

Most boarded-up fireplaces around here were closed off decades ago when a gas fire went in, and the original opening is often still sitting there intact behind the plasterboard. That is the good outcome, and it is also the common one.

The less welcome version is a flue that has been unused for fifty years and has shed material down it, a lintel that has shifted, or an opening that was partly knocked about rather than simply covered. All of that can be put right. The reason for looking before quoting is so you know which one you have before spending anything.

Period properties and plain square openings genuinely need different approaches, and both are normal work here.

Common questions

My fireplace has been boarded up for years. Can it be opened?+

Usually, yes. What matters is what sits behind the board and whether the flue is sound, which the survey and a CCTV look up the chimney will show.

Do I need a new hearth?+

That depends on the stove and the existing floor. There are minimum sizes and thicknesses, and we will tell you what yours needs before you buy anything.

Can you match a period property?+

Yes. Old chimney breasts and plain modern openings call for different approaches and both are everyday work here.
