What Happens on Installation Day
Most people have never had a stove fitted before and are quietly worried about the mess. Here is exactly how the day runs so there are no surprises.
Before the day
- Clear the area around the fireplace, including anything on the mantel
- Move smaller furniture out of the room if you can
- Keep pets somewhere else while doors are open
- A parking space near the house makes the day quicker
- Have your questions ready for handover, that is what it is for
Protecting the room
Sheeting goes down before any tools come in: floors, the hearth area and anything left in the room. A vacuum runs alongside the work, and a clear route to the van is agreed first so nothing is carried over carpet unprotected.
The work itself
- 1Arrival and protection
A quick walk through of the plan, then floors and furniture covered and a clear route to the van established.
- 2Preparing the opening
The fireplace is cleared, checked and, where needed, opened up and lintelled. The flue is swept before anything goes into it.
- 3Lining the chimney
The flexible liner goes down from the top, is connected at the stove and sealed at the pot with a new cowl.
- 4Fitting the stove
Register plate, hearth and stove positioned to the manufacturer's clearances, then the flue pipe connected and sealed.
- 5Commissioning
Draw test, smoke test, first burn, CO alarm check and the data plate filled in and fixed.
- 6Clean up and handover
Everything vacuumed, rubbish taken away, then ten minutes on lighting, fuel and air control before the certificate follows.
Before we leave
Draw and smoke tests, a first gentle burn, the carbon monoxide alarm checked, the data plate completed and fixed near the meter, then the room vacuumed and all packaging taken away.
Afterwards
The HETAS certificate and building control notification follow by post and email. After that it is a sweep once a year, which we book with you when the season comes round.

Common questions
How long does it take?+
A straightforward installation into an existing opening is usually one day. Opening up a blocked fireplace, plastering or building a new hearth can take it to two or three.
Do I need to be in?+
Someone needs to be there at the start and at handover. In between you can get on with your day.
Will there be a lot of dust?+
Sheeting goes down before anything else and the vacuum runs throughout. Where a fireplace has to be opened up there is more dust, and that is contained and cleared the same day.
Can I light it that evening?+
Usually yes, with a gentle first burn to cure the paint. That gets explained at handover along with how to run it day to day.
